Lian is a PhD candidate in Communication at the University of California, San Diego, where his research focuses on technology policy and the social dimensions of computing. Originally from the Bay Area, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Data Science and Product Design from UC Berkeley. His academic background bridges both STEM and the Humanities, and his teaching expertise centers on helping students develop the critical reading, writing, and analytical skills essential for success in college and beyond.

With four years of teaching experience at UC San Diego, Lian has earned outstanding student evaluations for his rigorous yet approachable teaching style. He believes students develop their strongest critical thinking and interpretive skills when they feel confident expressing their own ideas and finding their individual voice. In one-on-one tutoring, Lian enjoys helping students strengthen fundamental test-taking strategies while also supporting their broader academic growth and confidence.

Outside of teaching, Lian enjoys climbing, writing, and catching live music shows.
